SPECIAL RECOGNITION
PDG RALPH THURMOND, AN EXCEPTIONAL ROTARIAN

Please join me in honoring Ralph Thurmond, a Rotary Club of Sandy Springs' member, District 6900 Past District Governor (1991) and Past President of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs (1987). Ralph has been a Rotarian since 1978 and a member of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs since 1981. Ralph was elected to serve as Rotary Club of Sandy Springs president 1987 to 1988. During his presidency, Rotary International initiated the Polio Plus program and Ralph led this program for the first year of the three-year fundraising campaign. The Rotary of Sandy Springs at that time had around 55 members.

On the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court's 7-to-0 decision on May 5, 1987 to no longer allow the exclusion of women from Rotary Clubs, Mr. Thurmond reflected on the proudest moment during his presidency when he inducted the first woman member of Rotary Club of Sandy Springs, who also happened to be the first female Rotarian in District 6900. Mr. Thurmond’s leadership and sound counsel continue to support the civic, fiscal, and community service of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs. Thank you, Ralph, for your exceptional and continued service to our club, Sandy Springs, and the Rotary International Global Community.

Rotary International is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs meets most Mondays at the Hilton Atlanta Perimeter Suites at 12:15 PM. The lunch program includes club business and also hosts guest speakers - business professionals, elected officials, non-profit leaders and others from the Sandy Springs area.

We’re always looking for ways to make an impact in the community; our club members are actively engaged with senior and youth programs that support leadership development and student scholarship. While our motto and most important feature of Rotary International is “Service Above Self,” we also work together in fellowship as we enjoy great camaraderie. Austin Jackson - Young AA Pilot & Role Model

On April 17, 2017, Austin Jackson will speak to the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs.

Here is an excerpt from a recent AJC article on Austin Jackson by Ann Hardie: "Austin Jackson set his sights on becoming a pilot when he was a kid. What he didn’t count on was becoming an author, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and philanthropist along the way. But that’s what has been happening since Jackson published his first novel, “Takeoff: Seeing Beyond the Clouds,” when he was a junior in high school as a way to pay for flight school. Three years later, the 19-year-old Fairburn resident talks to church, student and other groups about how to soar. He and some friends recently started an online company that sells clothing and other inspirational items with a takeoff theme. Meanwhile, Jackson is working on his second book. Oh yeah. He’s also going to flight school. Jackson’s book is available on Amazon."

Foundation Director Rick Doyle Updates Rotary Club of Sandy Springs Foundation Giving

I’m delighted to report on RCSS Contributions to The Rotary Foundation through March 31, 2017. As a result of our exceptional participation and generosity, this extraordinary Club has once again distinguished itself!

• Annual Fund and PolioPlus donations -- $23,000 (Goal: $18,000)
• Annual Fund Per Capita giving -- $419. We are 1st in D6900 for clubs of our size, and 3rd overall behind Alpharetta and East Cobb.
• 17 Sustaining Members who donated $100 or more.
• 15 Paul Harris Fellows who donated $1,000 or more, including recognition points.
• 1 Level 1 Major Donor in Will MacArthur with a donation of $10,000. The Club now has 4 Major Donors.
• 1 Level 2 Bequest Society member in Lisa Stueve with a bequest of $25,000. The Club now has 6 Bequest Society members.
• 0 new Benefactors. The Club has 16 Benefactors.

Already, the Club has earned recognition as:

• 100% EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) Club for per capital giving of at least $100, and individual donations of at least $25
• Governor's Centennial Club for 100% participation in the Centennial Giving Challenge

Lisa Stueve has graciously agreed to share with us why she wanted to make a generous bequest to The Rotary Foundation, and how she was able to personalize her bequest so that it has special significance to her.

Former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Visits Rotary Club of Sandy Springs With A Special Request

"The father of a former Sandy Springs Rotary Club-sponsored Ambassadorial Scholar, Pauley Tedoff, is urgently looking for an altruistic kidney donor. Ira Tedoff is a stay-at-home dad to seven-year-old twins and continues to work part-time as a clinical psychologist. Ira will be starting dialysis at the end of the month, a process which will significantly affect his ability to care for and support his young children. Moreover, the longer Ira is on dialysis, the poorer the prognosis of a subsequent kidney transplant. Although Ira is the “universal recipient” with regards to biological compatibility, he has been told that that the wait for a kidney from the national list would still be between five and eight years. As such, Ira and his family are launching an international search for an altruistic donor. Rotary Club of Sandy Springs Members to Volunteer during "Volunteer For A Better Sandy Springs"

Coordinated by Leadership Sandy Springs, Volunteer For A Better Sandy Springs Day (VBSS) is the flagship community-wide service day for Sandy Springs! Through the work of 500+ community volunteers, we partner with 20+ parks, schools and nonprofit organizations to landscape, plant, paint and do light cleanup of their grounds and facilities. In its 15th year, VBSS has provided materials and volunteer hours worth more than $600,000 in citywide improvements. For those not going on the District 6900 Conference Cruise, this is a great opportunity to have fun with your fellow Rotarians. Tamara Carrera welcomes everyone at the Community Assistance Center. Meet up at North Springs High School for breakfast and opening remarks, then on the sites. Sites this year are:

At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, rotary international provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Their projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.
