April 16, 2018: Bert Reeves Georgia Legislative Report

Bert was first elected into the Georgia General Assembly in November of 2014 to represent House District 34, in Cobb County, which contains parts of Marietta and Kennesaw. Bert is a native of Cobb County and graduated from North Cobb High School in Kennesaw.

Bert is an attorney and partner in the Marietta law firm Smith, Schnatmeier, Dettmering, Collins, Reeves, Hobson & Hobson, LLP. Bert began his legal career as a prosecutor where he served for 5 years as an Assistant District Attorney in Cobb County. He earned his Juris Doctorate, Cum Laude, from Stetson University in St. Petersburg, Florida. Bert is a graduate of The Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Management with Dean’s List honors. While at Ga. Tech, Bert served as the school yellow jacket mascot, “Buzz” from 1997 to 2000, where he was named an All-American Mascot in 1997.

In the House of Representatives, Bert serves Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Non-Civil Committee and is the Chairman of a subcommittee of Judiciary Non-Civil. He also serves on the Ways & Means Committee, the Insurance Committee, the Higher Education Committee, and the Interstate Cooperation Committee. Bert is also a member of the House Republican Deputy Whip Team.

An active member of his community, Bert is a member of the Marietta Rotary Club, a member of the Wellstar Kennestone Hospital Regional Board of Directors, A Board Member of the Davis Direction Foundation, the Kennesaw Business Association (board member), and a graduate of Leadership Cobb. He has served on the board of directors for The Strand Theatre, the Marietta Visitors Bureau, the Leadership Cobb Alumni Association Executive Board, the Cobb County Bar Association Board of Trustees, the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta Community Advisory Board, and served as Chaplain for the Cobb Bar Association. Bert chaired the leadership program, Cobb Youth Leadership, for 2012-2013.

Bert was recognized by Georgia Trend Magazine in 2015 and named as “40 Under 40” for the State of Georgia. In 2016 the District Attorneys’ Association of Georgia and the Georgia Gang Investigators Association recognized him for his passage of anti-street gang legislation through the General Assembly. In 2015 he was also named as “Legislator of the Year” by the Georgia Council of Probate Judges for his work in the legislature. He was named the “Ross Adams Cobb County Young Lawyer of the Year” in 2012 by the Cobb Bar Association and is an alumnus of the Georgia State Bar Young Lawyers Division Leadership Academy.

In his spare time, Bert is the lead singer and guitarist for the band “Attractive Nuisance”. He also has acted on stage, performing lead roles in “The Odd Couple” and “The Sunshine Boys”. An avid mountaineer and outdoorsman, Bert has summited many tall mountains, including Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania, Africa), Mt. Rainier (WA), Mt. Whitney (CA), Grand Teton (WY), Mt. Elbert (CO), and Mt. Hood (OR).

Bert was married in September of 2014 to his wife, Amy. Amy, originally from Port Charlotte, Florida, is a Physician Assistant at Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat of Atlanta. Bert and Amy, along with their children Charlie and Albert, live in Marietta, and are members at Northstar Church in Kennesaw.
