K-9 police officers, Handler Reynnells and Handler Hanse to provided a look into their work.
On June 10th, two of Sandy Springs finest visited the our Rotary Club. Handler James Reynnells and his dog, Django along with Handler Sean Hanse shared from their experiences and answered dozens of questions.

You might think German Shepherd when you think of police K-9. Officers Reynnells and Hanse think differently. Neither of their dogs come from Germany nor do they speak German, as the old joke suggest. Their dogs are a breed know as Belgian Malinois and hail from Holland. AND actually, do respond best to commands spoken in Dutch.
While “petting is not advised”, said Officer Hanse these officers do have chance to bond with the dogs as they live 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with each other. Because the dogs have been strictly trained, they prefer to be working and are high strung. Though we’re told, once they’re retired from police-work they can and most often do learn to be a viable pet for many families.

Django, an exemplary example of an adult male Belgian Malinois. He is one of five police dogs on call to help Sandy Springs & neighboring cities.

The Sandy Springs Rotary Club would like offer a hardy thank you to Officers Reynnells and Hanse for giving us the 10-11 (general purpose police code for dog cases) on Django and how they provide protection our community.

Joe Labriola, Executive Director of Second Helping Atlanta to address the club
On Monday, June 24th Joe Labriola, the Executive Director of Second Helpings Atlanta will be visiting the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs.
Second Helpings Atlanta is a non-profit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and food waste in the metropolitan Atlanta area by rescuing surplus food and delivering it to those in need. Prior to joining Second Helpings Atlanta in May 2015, Joe was the Vice President of Product Marketing at PGi, the Chief Marketing Officer at Enterprise Information Management and spent 30 years at IBM before he retired in November 2010.

Upcoming Program
No Regular Lunch meeting on June 17th.
The usual lunch meeting has been replaced with a special wine tasting.
NATE WILL BE HOSTING A WINE TASTING AT THE KONGTHUM’S RESIDENCE ON MONDAY, JUNE 17TH AT 6:30PM.

Our newest Rotarian, Barton Lowrey
On June 3rd 2019, Barton Lowrey became the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs’ newest member.
Here is a little biographical information;
Barton is a family man. He and his wife, Betsy have a 15 month old daughter named Mary and a 3 year old Labrador named Bonny.
Originally from Rome Georgia, the Lowreys have called Sandy Springs their home for 3.5 years.
Barton has a Bachelors degree from UGA in Real Estate. He currently works for the Boy Scouts of America and has been with them for a year and a half.
The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs would like to offer our warmest welcome to Barton and his family. Let’s make a concerted effort to get know him, to get him up to speed with our club and the community of Sandy Springs as only the Rotarians can.
