This Week's Speaker on Zoom ...
Dunwoody President Cathie Brumfield, State of the Club

Grab your coffee or tea and the breakfast of your choice and join us this Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. on Zoom to get President Cathie's perspective of what we've accomplished and where we stand today as the Rotary Club of Dunwoody ... and perhaps a peek into the future from President-Elect Ardy Bastien. You can join the Zoom meeting at https://zoom.us/j/99732258910 or if you have the Zoom app on your phone or computer, you can go there and type in the meeting ID: 997 3225 8910. You can also join by one tap mobile at +13126266799,,99732258910# US (Chicago) or +16465588656,,99732258910# US (New York).

While we've had some challenges this year (who would have thought we'd be Connecting with Rotary through Zoom for the last three months of the year), we've also had some fun and made a difference in our community.

Cathie will be using a slide presentation that we'll post to our club website after the meeting.

Update on Rotary Club of Dunwoody Charitable Fund

With the recent fall of the stock market I thought I would bring the Club up to date on the status of the charitable fund. As of May 31, 2020, the balance in the charitable fund's investment account was $279,998.14 and the checking account balance was $26,191.67 for a total of $306,189.81.

At the top of the market in February 2020, the investment account was valued at approximately $302,000. At the low point it had dropped 16%.Presently, it is seven percent down from the top of the market. As of May 29, the Dow Jones was about 14% down from its high in February. The fund is doing better than the Dow Jones.

At a recent Friday meeting, Buzz Law, the fund’s investment advisor and former Dunwoody Rotarian provided some interesting numbers. Since 2014, we have deposited $1,080,576 into the fund but spent $1,238,230 which means we have spent $157,654 more than we put into the account. Due to our investment gains and reduction in our spending in the last few years we have a charitable fund that has sufficient assets to provide for our needs even in a bear market.

Thirsty Thursday Goes Live - June 18 in the Parking Lot by East 48th Street Market

While we won't be having our usual indoor event to celebrate the end of a Rotary year and the start of another, we will be having our first in-person Thirsty Thursday on June 18 in the parking lot by East 48th Street Market. Join us between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm - on June 18 we will be having our first in person Thirsty Thursday since our wonderful Leap into Rotary event at Marlow's in February. Charlie has graciously agreed to allow us to use the parking lot space outside his restaurant for this socially distanced outside event - more details in our next bulletin!

Spruill Arts Center Welcomes Our Support

In his presentation to the club last week, Alan Mother talked about the importance of the art in our community, and mentioned several ways we could be involved with the future of the Spruill Arts Center in Dunwoody:

  • The Center is looking for people with a passion for the arts who would like to serve on the Board of Directors. Alan says he knows Rotarians follow through and have the energy and drive they are looking for - and made particular mention of finance and public relations skills. You can contact Alan at the Spruill Arts Center for more information.
  • Summer Kids Camp will be happening at the Center between June 22 and July 31 - including Creative Arts Camp (ages 5-6), Virtual Arts Camp (ages 7-10), Performing Arts Camp (ages 7-10) and Studio Arts Camp (ages 11-14). Learn more and register now at https://www.spruillarts.org/youthclassesandcamps
  • You can become a member or patron of the Center - learn more at https://www.spruillarts.org/membership
  • Visit the Center - reopening June 22.
