Rotary International was the first organization to envision a polio-free world when it established the PolioPlus program in 1985. Since then RI has contributed more than $1.6 billion to ending polio. In 1988, RI helped launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Find out more at PolioEradication website

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a public-private partnership led by national governments with five partners with the goal to eradicate polio worldwide.

World Health Organization (WHO),

Rotary International,

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Since 1988, thanks to immunization efforts that have reached nearly 3 billion children, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year in 125 countries to 27 cases in three countries confirmed as of Oct 24, 2016. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, experts say $1.5 billion is urgently needed. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. For as little at $.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life!
